A single-stage furnace has just one gear when it runs. A two-stage furnace has a low gear and a high gear. A two-stage furnace will run in a lower gear in milder weather versus a single stage which will run in a higher gear.

Furnaces are usually sized with the coldest days of the year in mind. With New Mexico’s mild weather, a furnace running at full capacity is not always necessary. That’s where a two-stage furnace comes in. Two-stage furnaces start in a lower stage of heat which uses less gas and electricity thus cutting down on utility costs. On days where the demand for heat is greater, the furnace will run at full capacity
